At BlueScope, the way we work is as important as the work we do. We have a number of priority areas that we focus on within our ethics and governance framework. You can find some of our policies provided here.
We care for the environment
Our local communities are our homes so we understand the importance of managing our natural resources and amenities. We look out for the safety and wellbeing of each other, our communities and the environment and this is integral to how we do business.
Our approach is underpinned by our integrated health, safety and environmental management systems and defined risk control practices. Our environmental aspirations framework has been in place for over a decade, reflecting our commitment to protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.
Globally, we’re committed to operating our facilities in a way that respects environmental laws, our neighbours and the future sustainability of shared natural resources. Our approach is underpinned by our integrated health, safety and environmental management systems and defined risk control practices. We are embedding a HSE leadership, risk management and culture program – called HSE Evolution program – across our global footprint. The program builds on our strong foundations, aligns to Our Purpose and integrates contemporary HSE and leadership philosophies into our established processes.
We use the LAWWNE (Land, Air, Water, Waste, Noise and Energy/GHG) framework as a tool to highlight key environmental aspects important to our business.
We report against these LAWWNE aspects to monitor our performance and guide the improvements we require to move us closer to our environmental aspirations.
Land – protect the environment
We always aim to protect our soils, preserve cultural heritage and enhance biodiversity.
Waste – eliminate waste
We aim to drive resource efficiency and proactively contribute to building a circular economy.
Air – Preserve the air
We aim to reduce emissions to air and eliminate impacts from process disturbances, protect community health and local ecology.
Noise – protect the community from operational noise
We aim to ensure effective controls are in place, minimising community disturbance.
Water – Preserve community water sources
We aim to conserve fresh water and protect aquatic biodiversity.
Energy GHG – Net zero green house gas emissions by 2050
We aim to optimise the use of renewable energy and in-house generation and conserve community energy resources.
We encourage individuals and teams to share how they are improving the environment through our STAR program. The program demonstrates our people's commitment to Our Bond, HSEC Policy and Our Purpose. The shared learning's also help us to leverage our teams’ great work right across the world, which has the potential to reduce unnecessary rework and maximising the benefits.
Our HSEC Policy has been translated into the most common languages of the regions where we operate. Download a copy of our Health, Safety, Environment and Community Policy, or read the Policy in languages other than English.
